With its season and home opener scheduled for Sept. 6 against UNC Pembroke, the Winston-Salem State football team’s quarterback situation is still in flux.

During the first weekly press conference of the season for the football team on Sept. 2, first-year head coach Kienus Boulware was hit with the million dollar question: “Who will be the starting quarterback?”

There’s been a fierce quarterback competition brewing between seniors Rudy Johnson and Phillip Sims since the beginning of training camp in August.

Last season, his first at WSSU, Johnson led the Rams to a 10-2 record and a berth in the Division II playoffs. Sims is entering his first season with the team after transferring from the University of Virginia in July 2013. He played at the University of Alabama for two seasons prior to attending Virginia.

Boulware’s response to the question was, “Well, if you got a coin in your pocket, I’ll flip that and tell you. I really don’t know. I’m going to leave that up to the offensive staff to make that decision, but if I’m not mistaken, I think the last scrimmage came down to a rock-paper-scissors [to see who would start with the first team].”
