Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity returns after 22 years

 Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity, Inc. presented their spring 2010 line to Winston-Salem State. Alpha Phi Omega showcased 16 people during the probate. This is the first time that the organization has been at WSSU in 22 years. 

The chapter fell inactive in 1988 because of a hazing incident.

"Being a part of a comeback line is a feeling that can never be replaced," said Steffane Demery, a mass communications major from Charlotte. 

Wesley Hayes, a senior political science major from Charlotte said,   "Overall my experience in the organization has been a joyous one, getting to know people who share a common goal of leadership, friendship and service.

"I wanted to bring something to this campus that they haven't seen before. 

Alpha Phi Omega is a community service-based fraternity whose mission is to prepare campus and community leaders through service. 

Alpha Phi Omega was founded in 1925 at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. by 14 undergraduates and six advisers and now has more than 350,000 members in 360 chapters nationwide.

The Tau Chi chapter was chartered at WSSU on May 3, 1969.

"We have some community service projects already set up like "Adopt A Highway" where we clean up a portion of University Parkway," Demery said. 

"We also are trying to do "Dorm Storms" where we collect can goods from dorms and we also collected money for Haiti."

Alpha Phi Omega is planning to get their  campus activities started in the fall semester. 

"The reason that I chose to join Alpha Phi Omega is because I love doing service and giving back," Demery said.
