White student explains why he chose WSSU

By Damon Salvadore

After two years at Winston-Salem State I have fully grasped the college experience. Graduating from Forsyth Technical Community College was good, but I needed more. I needed an in-state university. I needed a well-established mass communication program. I needed acceptance. I needed WSSU.
Being from Bergen County, N.J., I found the term "HBCU" somewhat unfamiliar with most residents including myself.
It is rarely used because there are no Historically Black Colleges or Universities in New Jersey or New York. I think the reason is a greater distribution of race in northeastern education.
So why would a white college student, like myself, choose WSSU over any other school?
The biggest reason I selected WSSU was because of its well-accomplished mass communication program.
Mass Communications chair, and my adviser Dr. Jeter was able to ensure me that my credits from Forsyth Tech would transfer and they did.
After taking a tour of the University's campus, I was able to see all the benefits for students. It was also a huge advantage that the campus was located nearly 10 minutes away from where I live, and to be honest I also liked the small simple size of the campus.
I would have to say my favorite moment at WSSU was in October 2011 during homecoming. WSSU provided us with NBA superstar talent to view.
I watched and cheered thinking "These players chose this school to come to play."
Arguably three of the top five players in the NBA were here including Dwayne Wade, Kevin Durant, and Lebron James.
Another fun moment was the pickup basketball game between the students and teachers. Participating for the students, I had a lot of fun and was welcomed by everyone.
Before attending WSSU ,I had never taken an online class. I prefer the traditional face-to-face method. I never thought I would be able to actually succeed in an online course, until I got to WSSU.
My biggest obstacle was learning a foreign language. I attempted Spanish twice at Forsyth Tech; however, neither time was I successful.
Thanks to Dr. Uchenna Vasser and Mrs. Tika Owens I have completed three out of four required Spanish courses thus far.
Their tutorial guiding has helped pave the way for my foreign language education. I used to not be able to understand a word of Spanish, but now I can understand and pronounce well-articulated Spanish conversations.
After nearly two years at WSSU, I am 100 percent sure I made the correct decision.
This is a great institution that makes you feel welcome regardless of race.
WSSU also has teachers that go that extra mile, showing that they care.
They also have fun activities for students to guide them in the right direction and advanced technology to prepare students for the future.
On my experience at this University, I just wanted to say to WSSU....Thank you.
