Entertaining Criticism: Carrie
Stephen King fans everywhere flocked to theatres to see Carrie Oct. 18. The film has grossed more than $26 million at the box office.
This makes the third film adaptation of King's 1974 novel "Carrie."
Chloà Grace Moretz (Kick Ass) stars as title character, Carrie White.
For those unfamiliar with Carrie, the film follows White as she embarks on the last few months of high school in Maine.
White's mother, Margaret (Julianne Moore- Boogie Nights), is extremely religious and neglects to tell her daughter about puberty.
One day, as White showers in the locker room after gym class, her menstrual period begins for the first time. Since she has never experienced or heard of a period before, she goes ballistic and thinks she is dying.
The other girls in the locker room laugh at White's misfortune, throwing tampons and sanitary napkins at her as one girl, Chris Hargensen (Portia Doubleday- Youth in Revolt), records the event on her cellphone.
Luckily, White is rescued by gym teacher Rita Desjardin (Judy Greer-"Arrested Development"), but she is disappointed to find her mother has been called to pick her up early.
Upon returning home, White's mother chastises her; she thinks her daughter's period is a sin. White is locked away into her "prayer closet."
It is then that the teen realizes her telekinetic powers.
She returns to school and the bullying continues, with Hargensen posting the video on YouTube.
Hargensen's best friend Sue Snell (Gabriella Wilde- The Three Musketeers), regrets participating in the bullying and vows to make things right by forcing her boyfriend, Tommy Ross (Ansel Egort), to escort White to prom.
All is well until Ms. Desjardin discovers Hargensen has posted the video on the Internet and forbids her from prom.
Hargensen decides she will stop at nothing to torment White, and when everything collides on prom night, chaos ensues.
Carrie has received mixed reviews from critics.
The film has a 46 percent on movie-rating site RottenTomatoes.com.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, "It boasts a talented cast, but Kimberly Peirce's 'reimagining' of Brian De Palma's horror classic finds little new in the Stephen King novel -- and feels woefully unnecessary."
Conversely, the NY Daily News gave the film three out of five stars.
Joe Neumaier, NY Daily News movie critic, described the film as "slight but effective," acknowledging the cast's remarkable performances.
"Where Sissy Spacek seemed otherworldly and haunted in De Palma's film, Moretz is sadder. She's a terrific young actress," he said.
All in all, Carrie is perfect for a scary-movie date given the season.
Catch Carrie in theatres now.
