The Winston-Salem State football team rallied in the second half against Elizabeth City State to win its second straight CIAA championship 34-19 at Durham County Stadium.

Elizabeth City State (7-4) began the game with a 9-0 lead in the first quarter that included a 44-yard field goal by Brett Symonds and fumble recovery in the end zone for a touchdown.

The Rams (11-0) offense finally got it going with a touchdown in the second quarter that was a 10-yard pass from quarterback Kameron Smith to wide receiver Jamal Williams. The drive was 15 plays for 85 yards.

The Rams would go in to halftime with a 14-9 lead with their second touchdown coming from a 26-yard pass Smith connected to wide receiver Jameze Massey.

Despite allowing WSSU to score twice unanswered, Elizabeth City State continued to give the Rams all they could handle. Vikings' quarterback Namon Jones completed a six-yard pass to wide receiver Anthony Jones to take a 16-14 lead.

It was the Rams first time all season trailing in the second half to a CIAA team.

Smith also had to leave the game with a shoulder injury, forcing backup Anthony Carrrothers to lead the offense. Carrothers responded going 7-11 for three touchdowns and 123 passing yards helping the Rams finish their regular season undefeated.

Massey was selected the Most Valuable Player for WSSU with three touchdowns and 115 receiving yards.

The Rams will now prepare for the Division II playoffs.
