Thank You WSSU for the time well spent!
The Way I See It Editorial
Wow! I can't believe my undergraduate years at Winston-Salem State are almost over. It seems like it was yesterday, when I was saying "hello" to Atkins Hall. During my first year, I went home all the time. I even thought about transferring, but I'm glad I decided to stay. The memories, life lessons, friends and professors helped shaped the woman I am today. As a freshman, I spent a lot of time in my dorm and with girls from my hometown [Durham]. I do not regret this decision because it helped me appreciate the people I met and experiences I had down the road. During the past four years, I learned to be independent. I know I am prepared to enter the "real world." College is a stepping-stone for growth and maturity. I reached both, and I am proud that I did it at WSSU.
As an undergrad I achieved academic success, more than I thought I would. The late nights, early mornings and hard decisions paid off.
One of my greatest accomplishments at WSSU was becoming Editor In Chief of The News Argus June 2009. I struggled with the decision to become editor, but I'm truly thankful I had the opportunity. Serving as editor opened many doors for me. I worked with a dynamic, diverse group of individuals. To my staff, thank you for continuous support, time, and hard work. The many hours, long nights, missed social events were worth it.
When I became editor, I wanted The News Argus to increase in readership, staff and awards. I am proud to say that all three were achieved. We now have more participation in online polls, at least 15 students involved in the paper, and won nine awards. The News Argus is definitely headed in the right direction for continued success. To the staff of next year, continue to seek truth and report. Always remain positive and remember you are the voice of the campus. Strive for excellence no matter what department the paper is in. You have shown great potential, and I have no doubt that you will do well next year.
To my parents who have been an excellent support system. Thanks so much for your guidance and kind words of encouragement when the road seemed too hard.
To Dr. Cobb, I say thank you for believing in me and knowing that I had the potential to be a great editor. You are truly an excellent example of a great professor and an even better mentor. I will never forget the words of wisdom you have given me, both academically and personally.
To all my friends I gained on this journey, thank you for allowing me to share this experience with you. You will always have a special place in my heart. I look forward to great things from you.
Finally, yet importantly, thank you God, for the blessings you have bestowed upon me so far. I know this is only the beginning of the things you have in store for me. I am thankful for what you have already done, and I anticipate what the future holds.
I can honestly say I fulfilled the motto of WSSU. I entered to learn and I am now ready to depart to serve.
