Solid: WSSU's Track Teams Hit Their Mark At 2008 Wake Forest Open

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State's womens track & field team impressed the home crowd with some great performances on the second day of the 2008 Wake Forest Open, Saturday March 20.

The Rams turned in solid performances on second day of the two-day event with the sprinters leading the way.

WSSU junior sprinter Wykeita Barnett had a big day with a pair of solid finishes as well as a great performance with the women's 4x100m relay team. Barnett got the day started with a women's 100m dash finals. After placing seventh in the preliminaries of the event, Barnett finished fourth in the finals in a time of 12.11. The fourth place finish was the best finish of the season for the Eden, NC native. She also had a solid finish in the women's 200m dash, placing 22nd in the event in a time of 25.29.

WSSU sophomore Kayla Long had the second best WSSU finish in the event placing 31st in a time of 25.53. WSSU's freshman duo of Chantelle Bethea and Allegra Seegars also had some strong finishes in the event. Bethea finished 32nd in a time of 25.56 while Seegars placed 35th in a time of 25.75.

The Rams 4x100m relay team ended the day with a ninth place finish in a time of 48.17.

Men finish strongThe Winston-Salem State mens track & field team had a solid showing in front of the hometown crowd on day two of the 2008 Wake Forest Open. The Rams closed out the meet with some top-notch performances that gave the fans an up-close look at the team's progress and potential.

Junior sprinter Richard Marcellus had the best finish of the day for the Rams, placing 26th in the men's 200m dash with a time of 22.22 in the event. He left 82 sprinters behind in the event. Also placing well in the event was WSSU senior Gerrod Sidbury, who finished 55th in a time of 22.69.

The Rams also had some solid performances in the men's 400m hurdles as WSSU junior Jordan Holley finished 23rd in the event in a time of 57.90. Rams sophomore James Legins, III finished 30th in a time of 59.41.

More than 1,400 student-athletes competed over the two-day period.
