Annual women's luncheon features UNC Chapel Hill professor
The 5th Annual Women's Day Luncheon took place March 31. The guest speaker was Dr. Lyneise Williams, assistant professor of Art History at UNC-Chapel Hill.
The luncheon was hosted by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. The theme, "Writing Women Back Into History" was for National Women's History Month.
"We wanted to keep consistency, so we kept the theme," said Dale Williams, director of student activities.
She said she was pleased with the turnout. One hundred women were invited and about 85 attended.
Dr. Lyneise Williams was invited by Belinda Tate. Williams said that she was excited about speaking.
"I love the campus," Dr. Williams said.
"This gave me the opportunity to have interaction with the students."
She used two different pictures to explain the different roles women possess.
Following Dr. Williams discussion, an award ceremony was conducted honoring five students for their leadership skills and their participation in the Sheila Pree Bright "Young Americans" collection. Quamekia Shavers and Dominica Deloatch were among the winners.
"It feels good to be honored for a photo that might make a collection,"said Shavers, pre-med major from Winston-Salem.
"It's mind boggling."
Deloatch, an education major from Greensboro, said that this award serves as motivation. "This is a great experience that I won't forget. It made me realize I need to start doing things."
During an interview, Dr. Lyneise Williams and Dale Williams said that it's nice to take a break from our busy schedules.
"There are not many events where students and administrators can interact and talk about issues that women face," Dale Williams said.
The female staff of Diggs Gallery was also honored.
