Merger forms a student ‘one-stop-shop’
Fall semester University College and the division of Life Long Learning merged to form UCaLL.
UCaLL is now a "one-stop shop" for freshman, transfer and nontraditional students said Doria Stitts, associate provost and dean of UCaLL.
The reorganization of the two units has evolved into three distinct areas which provides services for all student from enrollment through graduation and beyond, Stitts said.
UCaLL's three divisions are Advising Services, Support and Engagement Services, and Academic Services and Assessment.
The Advising Services division has professional academic advisers for freshman and transfer students.
The Support and Engagement Services division focuses on continuing education, summer sessions and student experience.
The Academic Services and Assessment division focuses on the academic management of students through retention counseling, tutoring and supplemental instruction.
The division of Life Long Learning, formerly located in the Anderson Center, is housed in the Hauser building.
Derick Virgil, assistant dean of Academic Services and Assessment, said UCaLL personnel work with students and Winston-Salem State faculty and staff in order to provide appropriate support.
Stitts said that the ultimate goal of UCaLL is to provide great service to enhance the overall academic experience of University students through guidance, support services, and professional development.
UCaLL now has new deans.
The new class dean model designates Fred-Rick Roundtree as freshmen dean, Sandra Ingram as sophomore dean, and Donna Durham Pierre as upperclassmen dean.
Virgil said the class dean model will provide additional guidance for students during their matriculation.
They [class deans] assist in advising, problem-solving, strategic planning, program development and provide and expertise to the unit to ensure that policies are being implemented effectively, Stitts said.
In addition to Ramdition [freshmen orientation], UCaLL has RAMsition, a pre-major to major transition ceremony Stitts said. There is also an orientation for transfer students.
Virgil said this semester the Writing Center has about eight English faculty as professional tutors. "They [English faculty] will work at least eight hours in the Writing Center while teaching four courses each," Virgil said.
