SACS team cites Winston-Salem State University in 4 areas
First the good news.
The eight-member team from the Southern Association for College and Schools called Winston-Salem State's QEP a "Work of Distinction."
Now the bad news.
The SACS team cited Winston-Salem State in four different areas during its visit to WSSU for the second stage of the reaffirmation process March 23-25.
One cite was for not publishing WSSU's accreditation status in the two current catalogs.
The University was given a cite because it had adopted five general education outcomes, but the outcomes were not published in the current undergraduate catalog.
"The updates to the undergraduate catalog will be completed between May and mid June," said Dr. Merdis McCarter, senior associate provost.
Another cite involves "Faculty Competence." The team found cases where some professors are teaching courses for which they do not have credentials to teach.
WSSU was cited for noncompliance with Title IV responsibilities relating to the 2009 financial aid audit report.
WSSU was also cited for not returning aid to the federal government or lenders when a student accepted financial aid but did not attend class. The final decision of accreditation of WSSU will be announced at the December meeting. The team examined several different reports, including a Compliance Certification Report; Focused Report; and the QEP. The QEP is a new addition to the SACS reaffirmation process. WSSU's QEP, "Rams Write," focuses on improving writing in all undergraduate majors. "The QEP was not required in 2000," said Dr. Shirley Manigault, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Manigault and Dr. McCarter were invited to give a QEP presentation at the SACS summer institute in Tampa July 27. Their presentation will assist other schools develop effective QEPs. A copy of the QEP will be put on display in the Resource Room in Louisville, Ky. at the annual conference in December.
