Sigma Tau Delta International Honor Society reactivated at WSSU: Eight inducted

The Theta Mu Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society returned to Winston-Salem State March 4. 

The chapter had been inactive for 26 years.

 During its inaugural ceremony in Diggs Gallery, eight students were inducted.

Dr. Audrey Forrest-Carter, interim chair of the English and Foreign Languages Department, said that she is proud and that this is an exciting time for the membership.

"This is a very momentous occasion," Forrest-Carter said. "These students are in the forefront and they represent excellence and integrity." 

Shanice Lyons, a junior English major with teacher certification, said that she and the other inductees plan to do  community service projects that will help improve student writing.

"We are here to help bridge the gap of writing on campus," said Lyons, a native of Lexington.

"As English majors, we have the ability to help the students write in their majors.

 "It is especially important now because we are dealing with the Quality Enhancement Plan."

Sigma Tau Delta will provide English majors and minors academic opportunities including attending annual conventions and serving on panels.

WSSU has 20 active faculty Sigma Tau Delta members.

1984 was the last time the chapter was active at WSSU.

The organization has more than 700 chapters and is part of the Association of College Honor Societies.
