We have to do better: The problem is not just with our professors

I agree. We can't blame it all on the professors. Students cause many problems too. I wrote an op-ed about professors who don't teach.

I received many comments about this article.

If you did not read my article I suggest you stop reading right now, and go to www. thenewargus.com to see the Nov. 13 issue.

If you have read it, continue along with me.

According to an anonymous post/response on Dec. 8, 2012 "One of the reasons that some professors may be 'slacking' is that they are not backed by the administration." I totally agree.

The administration should investigate student complaints and let professors handle their classes.

The administration [the deans and department chairs] should make sure faculty are in fact doing their jobs.

WSSU, we have to do better.

The post also talked about how some students complain about begin given too much work and how they won't be prepared for the real world because they don't want to work hard.

Some students are spoiled and think they should be given grades instead of earning them. Students complain all the time about classes that are too hard and teachers who give too much work. Why wouldn't you want a professor or a course that challenges you.

WSSU, we have to do better.

The reality is once some WSSU students go into the real world they are going to be unprepared and unequipped to compete with their peers from other institutions.

Yes, the WSSU administration is working for both parties -- the students and the professors. But they should be fair to both parties.

I would not want to work where my boss fails to back me up in situations, when I am right.

WSSU, we have to do better. Deans and department chairs do not want their faculty to look unprepared or unable to teach their students.

When a large number of students perform poorly in one class, a formal investigation needs to be done by the department chair and or dean.

WSSU, we have to do better.

According to the anonymous post, "The University needs to start backing professors, allowing them latitude and authority."

I agree with this statement. If students are experiencing problems that cannot be resolved with their professor, the next level -- a department chair, dean or even the provost must become involved.

WSSU, we have to do better.

Students, you need a wake up call!

It's hard out there. Talk to some recent WSSU graduates who don't have jobs in their field of study or are unemployed. WSSU, we have to do better.
