Operation 'Depart to Serve' is underway

By VICTORIA STAPLES
On November 14, 2011

As we get closer to the end of the fall semester and 2011, I notice that students, especially seniors, are extremely stressed.

From presentations and recitals to seminars and internships, senior year is not as easy as many of us thought it would be.

If I had $1 for every time I have heard someone talk about how tedious and hectic this year has been, I would be able to pay off my [out-of- state] school loans.

Many people may think that it is not as difficult as we say that it is.

In addition to being full-time seniors, most of us have jobs, internships, volunteer responsibilities, community involvement, or organization commitments that require time and dedication.

Even with classes only on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and only 12 credit hours, my course load easily piles up.

This year has been the most difficult for me: from dealing with my mother's death the week of midterms spring semester to catching up on that semester's classes that I received incompletes in.

This is not including what I like to call, "The Stress."

This includes entering true adulthood; GRE, GMAT or PRAXIS testing; graduate school searching; job hunting; thoughts of relocating; or just finishing the year.

All of it can be extremely  overwhelming.

I understand all too well but remember that it can be done!

The key is to reflect on the analysis of the light at the end of the tunnel.

In the midst of all the stress, I encourage all seniors to look at transcripts or look through old pictures and see their transformation from freshmen year to senior year.

Recently, I realized my own growing process.

I was doing my 90-credit hour checklist and submitting my graduation application, and I began to see the product of my dedication and determination that I have put into my education.

I also encourage you all to make time to enjoy your last year of the undergraduate college experience.

I have heard alumni from various colleges say that there is nothing like it.

Spend time with friends to create lasting memories.

Make lasting impressions on faculty and staff – this could help you in the future.

Check the Campus Life Daily Digest and participate in as many campus-related activities as possible.

Take advantage of any opportunities available on campus from career fairs to resume' assistance with SGA.

When the going gets tough and defeat is at the door, remember that graduation is within arm's reach.

Envision those whom the completion of a college degree is for.

Many students at Winston-Salem State, including myself  are first-generation college students, and if not, graduation is a pivotal, important, memorable step in one's life.

While planning for the future, keep in mind: Enter to Learn, Depart to Serve – whether it is in this city, state or even this country.

On the journey to the top, it is always important to reach back to pull someone else up.

Stay encouraged seniors; our  Winston-Salem State chapter is almost at the close.
