Ram Madness: Teams Prep For ’07-’08 Season

The 2007-2008 season will be the second year in Division I for Winston-Salem State men’s basketball team, and the first season in which they’ll have a full MEAC schedule. The Rams will kick off the season on Friday, Nov. 9, when they travel to Ames, Iowa, to face IowaState University.

Both men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted an event on Oct. 12 called “Ram Madness,” which gave fans the opportunity to meet the teams.

The men’s team made its entrance, returning seven players from last year in addition to the six newcomers. The teams gave fans a preview of what to expect for the upcoming season by having a 10-minute scrimmage game. Ram fans also saw the men’s team defeat the Rams women’s basketball team in a three point shooting contest.

The game schedule features more than 14 home contests for WSSU.

Last year the Rams only had a total of five home contests. One additional game in Winston-Salem will take place when WSSU travels across town to face the city’s other Division I school, Wake Forest University.

“Any time you have a home game, it’s a bonus,” said Head Coach Bobby Collins. “Coming home this year is a lot better than the 25 games we played on the road last year.”

For the first time in years, WSSU will play rival North Carolina A&T on the hardwood.

“The home game I look forward to the most is when we play North Carolina A&T,” said junior, Rachel Hicks.

The Rams will play the Aggies twice. The Rams will travel to Greensboro on Jan. 8, 2008. TheAggies will travel to WSSU on Feb. 23, 2008.

Collins will face his old team, Hampton University, when WSSU faces Hampton on Jan 21, 2008, in Winston-Salem.

Ticket sales for the upcoming season are: general admission $12; reserved seating, $15 (Student with valid ID)/Senior Citizens (55 years of age or older). WSSU students get free admission by showing their Ram Card at the ticket booth.
