Trey Sighting at WSSU

At Winston-Salem State University, celebrities don’t walk through the breezeway every day, but students got a glimpse of a rising star Sept. 17.

R&B singer Trey Songz came to WSSU to promote his upcoming sophomore album “Trey Day”. While the students were eating in the cafeteria, Songz came out of the elevator of the Thompson Center with a focused look on his face, like he was about to perform on stage in front of millions. When he entered the café, packs of girls gave him a standing ovation while packs of dudes angrily kept eating their lunch waiting for 50 Cent or Kanye West to walk through the cafeteria doors one day like Trey did. Songz sat down in the back of the cafeteria, signed autographs, and promoted his album by playing random songs that will be featured on “Trey Day”. The line for autographs was wrapped around the corner of the cafeteria. The lines were longer than they have ever been for food from the café.

Students were not allowed to take pictures with Songz, but they were allowed to take a picture of him, which was not as good, but as good as it was going to get. After an hour of playing songs off the album and signing autographs for fans, Trey said goodbye and headed to his van where he awaited yours truly for an interview. While he was fixing his durag, he began to talk about the album.

“Trey Day is a little edgier, and sexier, and we just giving the ladies what they want,” explained Trey. He described how the first album “Gotta Make it” was just his introduction into the music world. Trey also mentioned that there wouldn’t be a lot of collaborations. Only rappers Jim Jones and Bun B. are featured on the new album.

Trey explained that he named his sophomore follow-up album “Trey Day” because it’s his time to shine now.

“I think Chris Brown, Ne-Yo, and Tank are all doing their thing in the game right now, but R&B is in a good place in music, and I aim to get up there myself,” said Songz.

When asked if there was anyone he would seriously consider working with in the future, Songz said that he would like to collaborate with Jay-Z.

He then smiled, gave me a pound, and got in the van to leave the school. So there you have it folks. A celebrity in our school, and it isn’t even Homecoming yet. “Trey Day” hits stores October 2nd. It will feature production by the Runners, and R. Kelly, and it has appearances by Bun B. and Jim Jones. Until then, make sure you start coming to the café more because you never know who might pop up next.
