Six Winston-Salem State athletic teams were honored with CIAA championship rings for their 2010-11 performances during halftime of the football game against Fayetteville State, Sept. 24.
The athletic teams were baseball, softball, women’s tennis, women’s track and field, and both cross country teams.
“To be able to give them [the players] the rings on Saturday was phenomenal,” Athletic Director Bill Hayes said.
Hayes said that it is exceptional for any school at anytime to win six championships in one year.
The six championships were the most by any CIAA school in the past academic year.
Hayes said that the Athletic Department was not prepared financially to buy championship rings for so many teams at the same time.
“A group of coaches and student athletes who are able to win six championships in one year posed a little bit of a problem,” Hayes said.
“The problem was you don’t budget for six championship rings.”
The Athletic Department raised money to buy the rings.
Hayes said that it he did not get the rings until late summer.
