When attending a university-level institution, many obstacles may arise that could affect students’ ability to focus on studies. Whether it’s the nervousness of being away from home or simply making the grades to pass a course, the benefits of the traditional college experience can be ruined. Fortunately for some students, they find hope and strength in a superior authority.
This year’s Homecoming celebration week began with an invigorating gospel concert that attracted hundreds.
Performances by a variety of artists, ranging from dance to vocal, impacted audience members from the university as well as the surrounding community. Some students at Winston-Salem State University believe that trusting in sacred influence can have a powerful effect on the process of achieving professional goals. For example, sophomore and Social Work major Steven Mills is of the Christian faith and personally understands the relationship between students and the desire to obtain a sense of spirituality while in school.
“I believe that we have to work harder for what we want because we aren’t just given anything,” Mills said.Along with participating in extracurricular activities, this social work major finds a source of strength when faced with the frustrations from heavy workloads. “It helps me believe in myself,” he adds.
On the flip side, a belief in something that may help in the pathway to success can also be a tool constricting the urge to behave inappropriately. Accounting major Samantha Reed agrees.
“For me, it’s just the things you do. You won’t be so quick to do things that are not right,” she explains.With various events taking place all over campus, distractions can often be easily presented in the duration of a single semester. The student life in itself can unconsciously be spent relaxing on the yard with friends or going to the party after the big game. Whatever the case, one can lose focus of the purpose of obtaining a post-secondary education.
Despite a vast assortment of religions, the meaning of spiritual stability can be very important to those relating it to everyday life. The struggles associated even with earning a degree may become discouraging for some, but reliance on divine guidance can maintain a feeling of security and sanity on campus.
