The sounds of the Marching Ram Band and the boisterous yells of cheerleaders welcomed WSSU fans on Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Homecoming football game against Howard University. Alumni traveled from near and far to be a part of the festivities surrounding the week-long Homecoming activities that began with a Gospel Concert Oct. 1 and ended with a Worship Service Oct. 8.
Despite all the excitement and activities, pep rallies were not the only events taking place on campus. “Alumni Return to Serve Day” also commenced, sponsored by the Office of Career Services, Alumni Affairs and WSSU National Alumni Association.Alumni who are currently in the workforce or who have pertinent advice to offer students traveled to campus to share their knowledge at the Diggs Gallery and in classrooms across campus.
“Emphasis [is] placed on how education has personally affected the speaker’s life, what types of goals and careers students can achieve, the realities of the job market, and how to network,” Helene Cameron, director of the Office of Career Services, explained. “The one-day event enables alumni to partner with all academic departments,” she added. “Each department provides a forum through classroom visitations, where alumni and students can dialogue and network.”
“The concept is a good idea,” LaTonya Easter, senior Special Education major, said.”They can share with us what the ‘real’ world is really like.”
