If you like learning in different environments, you might enjoy studying in West Africa. The Office of International Programs has announced that it will once again hold its Summer Study Abroad Program in Benin and Ghana . The Benin and Ghana African Diaspora Studies program takes place in Benin , Togo and Ghana . This is the heart of the most intensive and historical activities of the Atlantic slave trade that populated America with Africans. The courses and course work are enhanced by the study of history, arts, and social and economic conditions. “This is really an amazing experience to learn about other cultures and places while earning credits towards your degree,” said Katrena Henderson, an International student and a Scholar Advisor. The five week program runs June 2 through July 7. The cost of this cultural experience is $3,900, which includes roundtrip airfare to Accra, room and board (three meals a day), and in-country group travel. To be eligible for the program, applicants must have completed at least two successful semesters at WSSU prior to program departure, have a minimum 2.75 GPA and a good conduct record. To apply, log onto WSSU’s home page, click Current Students, Academics, International Program. The link is on the right side of the International Programs page. There you will find a complete color brochure advertising the program, along with application instructions and guidelines. “I think it is a great idea that Winston Salem State University is broadening their horizons and allowing students to think outside of the box,” former student Phillip Maddox said. “This program provides students the chance to view a different prospective and gain a new respect for other customs.” Brandon Hardy, a junior, agreed with Maddox. “I love to travel, and what is more exciting than going to Africa! I would get to see so much and actually get in touch with my roots of being African-American. I am glad to know that this trip is counted as credit hours, I think I may try to sign up today,” he said. The Benin and Ghana African Diaspora Studies application deadline is Wednesday, Feb. 28. Even if you cannot do Study Abroad, no worries. International Education week is November 13-17. There will be several enriching exhibits for one to learn from, as well.
