March is Women’s History Month, and although it’s great to celebrate women who have made towering contributions to the advancement of others, the most important woman in most people’s lives is the one called Mom.
For most of us, she is our best and loudest cheerleader, motivator and encourager, financial loan officer, cook, cleaner and dearest friend. There are other women in our lives and history who have greatly influenced us as well.
English major and junior Ashley Ekwem-Thorpe, 22, describes a mentor in her life as “very honest and very patient. If you could see her auora it would be red-orange for warmth,” Ekwem-Thorpe said.
“Auntie Dora” as Ekwem-Thorpe calls her, is an ordained minister in Washington, D.C., who is doing missionary work among people living with HIV in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Ekwem-Thorpe said Auntie Dora, who is not a relative, has helped her become a better person. She always made her feel beautiful and worthy, she said.
Nursing major and freshman Chantel Nicole, 19, describes her mother as the most influential woman in her life because she’s the “perfect role model…who really cares” and “is there when I need her.”
This month, take time to reflect and appreciate the women in your life, but don’t let it begin and end with March. Show your love everyday.
