Students should follow example set by sports heroes and supermodels

For 14 years, supermodels Tyra Banks and Naomi Campbell had claws out for one another, and sports giants, Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant, were like the lion and hyena, eternal enemies. The four could hardly be called role models. Their feuding egos left lots to be desired.

But what person has not had a conflict with someone else? And why do people rub each other the wrong way? One reason is some people simply do not get along well with other people. Others are petty. Still others let their egos get in the way.

An oversized and overactive ego can cause problems for anyone. Perhaps Shaq and Kobe couldn’t make it as Lakers teammates, because of their immense egos. The same is true of Naomi and Tyra. One runway didn’t seem to be long enough to accommodate the over-inflated egos of both.

Winston-Salem State has its share of drama, too, with students differing over any number of things – opinions, dress, lifestyle, attitude, background, friends, relationships, etc.

Fortunately for fans, Shaq and Kobe have buried the hatchet, at least for now. Last month, as Bryant was doing his pre-game stretches, Shaq approached hiim and congratulated Bryant on the birth of his daughter and the impending birth of their second child. The two hugged briefly and shared a few words.

Tyra invited Naomi to her talk show, and the two put their differences aside. Maybe it’s time for us on this campus to follow their example. How ’bout it? Isn’t it about time

we get beyond our feuding egos, our need to control or to be right, our need to judge?

Think about it.
