‘Always Watching’ Editorial: “Greetings Ram Family”

Permit me to introduce myself. I am a Durham native and a senior mass communications major with a concentration in journalism. For the 2009-10 academic year, I joined the ranks of student leadership at Winston-Salem State University by assuming the position of Editor in Chief of The News Argus.

As your newspaper editor, I will provide the WSSU community, especially students, with comprehensive and informed reports – news, features, sports and opinions. I will be guided by the First Amendment and the principles of good journalism, by publishing news that is fair, balanced, objective, and accurate.

I will be tenacious in my pursuit of getting the stories and getting them right. From time to time, my staff will probably become bothersome, meddlesome and downright pests as we try to cover some of the unpopular issues that impact the WSSU students. However, we will not neglect to print the “good” stuff that makes me proud to be a Ram.

I want every issue of The News Argus widely anticipated, read and respected throughout the WSSU community and beyond the Argus Online, www.thenewsargus.com.

My staff is small, but I hope that will change. I want it to double in size. Working on the Argus staff is an honor and a privilege. It takes a lot of time, patience and diligence, so only serious students who want to be published and adhere to good journalism should consider; otherwise don’t waste your time.

The hard work is rewarding. This past year, I had the privilege of attending the annual national Black College Communication Association conference with the former Argus Editor. The News Argus staff competed in several categories and came away with one first place award (NC A&T and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University won more than 20 awards between them). This year will be different.

My staff and I have begun making changes in the appearance and content. The Campus Crime Blotter (i.e., Police Blotter) is back, and the Argus Online will be more interactive. Stay tuned…

I ask my readers to remember that The News Argus is a student newspaper and a “training ground” for my staff and me. We will make mistakes by commission and omission, unintentionally of course, but with your help, patience and constructive criticism we will get better. Your feedback is important to us. Send a letter to the editor and participate regularly with our poll questions and blogs. We can’t be everywhere, so send us a picture you have taken of a campus event. We will publish it if we can.

I am excited about being the new Editor and look forward to what the year will bring.
