Textbooks – you can’t afford them and you can’t afford not to have them. As tuition fees increase and refunds decrease, it becomes harder to squeeze the cost of books into your budget. Fortunately, opportunities to buy books at reasonable prices are available. Amazon, Barnes and Noble, ecampus.com and many other companies are providing great ways to save a dollar on must-have textbooks. There’s also the campus bookstore, which shouldn’t be overlooked. You’ll find used books there that are cheaper than some used books offered online. Tanya Dobbins, a senior Mass Communications major who is also a single mother, feels the pinch more than most students. “I can’t afford a $130 Spanish book, pay my rent for the month and feed my children,” she said. “It’s ridiculous.” The high cost of textbooks is a problem for instructors, as well as students. Many instructors complain that they find it difficult to teach a class if their students fail to purchase the required book. Research is essential when trying to find a cheap book, not to mention patience. Books purchased online, for example, may not arrive the next day or even the next week. There is also the scare of identity theft which is linked to the Internet.
