Rams declaw St. Aug’s Falcons 35-17

The Rams extended their winning streak to six games as they defeated conference opponent St. Augustine’s 35-17 at Sanderson High School in Raleigh Oct. 19.

WSSU (6-1, 4-0 CIAA) was led by junior running back Maurice Lewis, who carried the ball 15 times for 90 yards and three touchdowns.

Junior quarterback Rudy Johnson didn’t have his best day, but his teammates picked up the slack.

Johnson passed for just 207 yards, no touchdowns and an interception.

The No. 1 defense in the CIAA, led by senior linebacker Carlos Fields played well.

Fields led WSSU with 10 tackles and a forced fumble.

The Rams turned the Falcons over three times, and the turn-overs were important because the discrepancy in total offensive yards was not a big one.

WSSU finished with 403 yards while St. Augustine’s put up a respectable 317.

Senior wide receiver Tehvyn Brantley, who leads WSSU in almost every receiving stat this season, left the game with a groin injury.
