And the Rammie goes to…

The Mass Communications Department at Winston-Salem State held its Eighth Annual Mass Communications Conference April 17 in the Anderson Conference Center.

Tom Blount, editor for The High Point Enterprise, was the keynote speaker.

Students engaged in interactive workshops facilitated by local Mass Communications alumni, who are working media professionals. The workshops focused on public relations, radio, print journalism and television.

During the luncheon, hosted by radio personality B-Daht, students were presented with Rammie Awards for their work with The News Argus, Ram TV and WSNC 90.5.

More than 40 entries submitted for competition were judged by the newsroom staff of The High Point Enterprise, local television broadcast professionals, and staff of WSNC 90.5.

Dr. Phillip Jeter, chair of the Mass Communications Department said he was happy to see former students come back to speak at the conference.

“I was pleased to see that so many of the panelists and breakout session leaders were WSSU DMC alums,” Jeter said.

“It was also gratifying to see that many of them are entrepreneurs who are seeking to carve out their own unique slice of the media business.

“I really think students can’t think about being their own bosses too early, and today’s job market environment is the latest reminder of the dangers of depending on some big corporation for your livelihood,” he said.

Elvin Jenkins, general manager of WSNC Radio in the Mass Communications Department said the students really worked hard on their projects this year.

“I hope that more of them compete for next year’s competition,” he said.
