Sharon Robinson says she was inspired by a James A. Gray lecture series guest to start her own business. The junior mass communications major said that she’d always promised herself that she’d return to school once her children grew up. After coming to Winston-Salem State University from twenty years in the banking industry, Robinson set her goals even higher and began thinking of becoming a business owner. Robinson said FUBU executives encouraged her to “own” herself by starting a business.”I was intrested in selling for Bovanti because their products were wonderful,” said Robinson. “So when one of the men suggested I write a proposal I did it.The Bovanti Cosmetics headquarters accepted Robinson’s proposal in December, making her boutique Bovanti’s third venue location along with the Atlanta and Greensboro stores. She immediately began working on her boutique, located in the Hewitt Business Center off Marshall St. in Old Salem. On Jan. 24 Robinson had the grand opening of the boutique she designed to be appealing to the eye, with evidence of elegance.”Women are really conscience of environment, so design was important to me,” said Robinson.Robinson says that because of the nature of her business, and having to familiarize herself with website management, her matriculation through the mass communications department has served helpful in her pursuit of a successful business. “Communication is vital to anything you do,” said Robinson. “I plan to use my business for some of my practicum or whatever capacity I can to get credit.” Robinson says she sees her business growing rapidly, allowing her to pursue other endeavers in the near future. “I would like to have more than one store. In five years, I’d like the ability to embark on something within the mass-media profession. I want to have proprietorship of a few different stores, and have people managing them while I embark on my true love – journalism.”
