WSSU bids farewell to ‘Mama’

Dr. Michelle Bernita Releford died Nov. 8 at a hospice in Georgia.

She was 56.

Dr. Releford served as the Dean of the University College, where she directed her brainchild – RAMDITION – the week-long orientation program for incoming students.

The students she worked with at University College affectionately called her  Mama, Doc, or Ramzilla.

She had also served as Interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and was a member on the strategic plan committee that developed goals, procedures, and timetables for improvements to the University.

“WSSU lost a friend, campus mother and one of the most appreciated administratorstors at our University,” said Jonathan Jackson, senior management information systems major and Legacy Leader from Charlotte.

“Her passion for seeing not only the student, but the person grow, will undoubtedly be one of the reasons many [students] are who they are today.”

Dr. Releford was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Winston-Salem chapter of Links.
