Nearly 200 Winston-Salem State students are back on campus this semester after spending the fall being housed in area hotels such as Wingate by Wyndham, Hawthorne Inn, and Brookstown.
“Due to an increased enrollment in the freshman class, space was needed to house freshmen [off campus],” assistant director of Housing & Residence Life, Cassandra E. Bradley said. “Therefore, upper-class residents were relocated to hotels.”
The students who were in the hotels are now being housed in Foundation Heights, Rams Commons, Wilson Hall and Gleason-Harrison Terrace residence halls.
“I am relieved to be back on campus because I couldn’t personalize my room to make it more like home,” sophomore Gaybrielle Danzey said.
“It’s more convenient and I don’t have to worry about catching a shuttle back and forth to campus,” she said.
Most students have reported that they are satisfied with their current housing situation and have found no problems with their room selections or roommates.
“As of right now, I have no problems with my room in Gleason and I feel great about returning back on campus,” sophomore Theresa Cato said.
However, approximately 60 students in Foundation Heights may not be as pleased with their rooms due to flooding that occurred Jan. 17 through 19.
Heavy water fell from the ceilings of Foundation Heights, damaging some rooms and students’ belongings. The flooding occurred in rooms on all four floors.
“The floods were caused by an activation of the sprinkler heads in the attic,” Bradley said.
Some students were temporarily displaced again, while others have been relocated within Foundation Heights.
