Even with Winston-Salem State winning games and putting up points in bunches there still are a
lot of empty seats in Bowman Gray Stadium during home football games.
Many of the reasons for this that I hear from students are that “We don’t want to see us blow
teams out they want to come see closer games. “
I remember hearing students say during our unsuccessful move to the NCAA Division I
level “Why would I show up just to see us lose.”
Is there any pleasing WSSU student’s when it comes to our football team?
Let me tell you this, the goal of playing football is to outscore your opponent and win the game.
The entertainment for the fans is there with a winning football team (something we haven’t had
in a while) and with other entities such as the band, cheerleaders and the voice of WSSU alum B. Daht.
As a fan of the game I don’t care if I’m watching a close game or a game where my favorite team
is up by 50 points. If my team is winning it’s a good thing for me.
Also, there are other things that ride on attendance at home football games. If we win the
conference championship (which we probably will) and our ranking in the division for the NCAA
selection committee is high enough we will get a home playoff game. But this is contingent upon the
fans, students and those who support the Rams to come and fill the seats at Bowman Gray.
If the selection committee believes that WSSU cannot pack out the stadium then the chance of a
home playoff game will be nothing more than an afterthought.
Support your school and support your teams. Let’s show NCCU and N.C. A&T that we have more
spirit and better teams than they do.
