Robin Hoods, not extremists

One hundred and two incidents of piracy were reported to the International Maritime Bureau. Piracy has doubled in the first three months of 2009. With the economy in such a depressing state, worldwide crime was inevitable.

The IMB has blamed the removal of Islamic extremist from Somalia for the increased pirate attacks.

I blame the economy. While the rest of the world struggles even more for food and shelter the United States still prospers, even though everyone claims to be broke.

The world has realized that money is not a problem in the United States.

In a country where athletes have the audacity to turn down $25 million a year contracts, which is more money than some countries have in their national budget, why wouldn’t someone get upset?

A free market economy is a wonderful theory that creates opportunity for everyone to succeed, but the current economic situations were brought on by the most successful of the world, the United States.

The worst part is that if Bill Gates loses $10 million of his $40 billion, he is still better off than 99 percent of the world’s population.

The system is structured to increase the wealth of the wealthy and to make sure the poor never prosper.

Therefore, I see these pirates as modern day Robin Hoods. When things aren’t going well for you and push starts to shove what would you do?

I can’t say what I would do, but I would do whatever it takes to survive. With Somalia being in the world’s blind spot of Africa, which is ironically the world’s second largest continent, aid is up for grabs.

I understand that most of these pirates are Islamic extremists, but what are their motives?

Does anyone care to hear their side?

Some questions start to pop up, such as, where did the guns come, and how about the boats? I don’t believe that there is neither a gun factory nor a boat factory in Somalia.

But Somalia has potential to have something more precious than gold, and in some cases life itself– oil.

According to somaliawatch.org, geologists have recently tested soil in northern Somalia that shows the potential for hidden oil and natural gas reserves.

Could all of this be a hoax, or is it really convenient that piracy is increasing in this coastline country?

I don’t want to spread rumors, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Somalia isn’t attacked soon by one of the great eight countries.
