After church, stop at ABC stor, maybe

The North Carolina General Assembly could be taking another big step this year by repealing the ban of alcohol sales in Alcohol Beverage Control Stores on Sundays.

If passed, the new law would give county ABC boards authority to decide to open on Sundays.

An editorial published in the Winston-Salem Journal said that North Carolina has been gradually relaxing its alcohol sales laws since Prohibition ended in 1933.

The U.S. Distilled Spirits Council reported state and local governments are losing $10 million a year by staying closed on Sundays.

Therefore selling liquor on Sundays would bring more revenue to North Carolina. It would also result in more jobs at the ABC stores.

I understand the concerns that religious people must have. But people don’t have a problem with beer or wine being sold in the Wal-Mart or the gas stations on Sunday.

I am hopeful that ABC stores will be open on Sundays throughout North Carolina.
