Missed free throws seal Lady Rams first home loss 49-53

The Lady Rams started the season at home with a record of 0-2 with back-to-back losses in a tournament at Elon, N.C., Nov 14 and 15. A close loss against Elon day one of the tournament 62-59 and 65-50 defeat to UNC-Wilmington day two of the tournament.

The Lady Rams were hoping to improve their record to 1-2 by winning their first home game in front of an electrifying crowd that packed the house at C.E. Gaines Center.

The game started with the Navy Midshipmen scoring first with a layup by center Cassie Consedine.

The Lady Rams would not score until 11:19 minutes in the first half with a layup by Vontisha Woods, which would spark a 6-0 run by the Rams and close the Midshipmen’s lead to 5 points, and they would get no closer in the first half.

The Midshipmen took a 30-17 point advantage going into halftime.

The Midshipmen extended their lead in the second half with a jump shot by Kelly Altschul.

During the second half, the Lady Rams could capitalize on scoring. The first score came from Lady Rams newcomer, 6-foot-5 center Elizabeth Maas. With 16:10 left of the game, 5-foot-6 point guard Rene Rector narrowed the gap with a 3 pointer bringing the score to 21-32.

The Midshipmen scored again a minute later with two good free throws by K.C. Gordon, point guard. Then Rector scored 3 points, and the Midshipmen led by 10 points. A layup by Maas shortened the gap 26-34.

The Midshipmen scored several unanswered points making the score 28-40. The Lady Rams went on a 12-0 run to cut into the Midshipmen’s lead by 5 with a score of 40-45.

Later in the game, forward/center Woods scored 3 points and a lay-up to bring the Lady Rams within a 2-point deficit with 45-47 and 1:58 seconds left to play. The Midshipmen would go on a 3-0 run to extend their lead to 5 points. Two layups from Woods and red shirt senior, Keoshia Worthy made the score 49-51 with 00:07 seconds left to play.

But the Lady Rams late rally was not enough as the Navy Midshipmen would go on to win the game by a score of 49-53 to drop the Lady Rams season to 0-3.
