Summer school starts on May 19, and a high turnout is expected.
“It is important for students to pre-register,” said W. Kenneth Bulls, interim director of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions.
“It gives them a chance to get any important paper work out of the way. Our departments like to promote a first come, first serve process to Winston-Salem State’ students.”
Validation must be completed April 14 to May 13. Afterward, students will be dropped from classes.
Bulls said that marketing, campus ads and word of mouth will keep students informed about summer school.
“The economy will not affect how summer school will be run,” he said.
“There will be no cutbacks. Our program is self-supported and does not receive any state funds. If the number of students are low, pay cuts will play a major role. If a class has less than 10 students attending, the class will be canceled,” he added.
“In summer school, I do plan on taking classes for my major,” said junior Audrey Kelly, a rehabilitation studies major from Melbourne , Fla.
“But with our current economic status, a lot of people will not be able to afford summer school. This can be discouraging to me because the class I will be enrolled will be dropped.”
Christina Snodgrass, a summer school program associate, said “The summer school program is more of a facilitator and the different departments get the teachers for courses. They decide based on student needs.
“The classes being offered in these sessions are basically the same as the ones in the past,” Snodgrass said.
There are 378 classes being offered in both sessions.
According to the summer school office, the most populated classes expected in the two sessions will be Anatomy and Physiology I.
Both of these classes will have five sections and are being offered five times a day.
Classes will also be offered online, evenings and weekends.
No class will be merged until registration is over.
Financial Aid Review Sheets for the 2009 summer sessions will be available for continuing students.
The application processing fee of $40 is non-refundable.
A student meal plan will be available and housing will be located in Wilson Hall.
