Spring graduation is approaching and WSSU’S Office of Career Services is developing career-based workshops to assist students in their internship and job search.
“We are a referral service that offers a connection between the employer and the student,” said LaMonica Singleton, interim director of Career Services.
“We usually post jobs up online or in the office and reach out to the job interest of the student,” Singleton said.
“It’s up to them to pursue the opportunity and determine their next step.”
The students that the office assists are successful in their job search. Ninety-five percent of the students receive full-time salary positions that include benefits such as health insurance, 401k plans, and commissions.
“I began looking for internships for months and found three that I’m considering,” said Brandon Dow, a senior finance major.
“It’s a very tedious job and takes a lot of diligence.”
Getting an internship after graduation may take approximately six months to a year. Career Services recommends seniors to start their search as early as possible.
Internships are becoming more essential because they give students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in real world environments.
Career Services offers other resources such as the computer lab, books and guides, resume and cover letter samples, and referred Web site full of background information on various companies.
Another resource offered is RamTrak, an online student resource system located on the university’s Web site. There, students may create personal accounts, with their resume and skills posted ready to send to future employers.
Career Services also hosts weekly workshops that provide information on upcoming internships, job development and resume assistance. Throughout the year, job fairs bring corporate businesses to campus.
“I attended two workshops and received pointers on how to properly update my resume,” said Ikea Johnson, a sophomore exercise science major from Madison, N.C.
“Also, I was given much information on companies that are hiring that is related to my major.”
The Career Services Office provides students with the opportunity to begin career planning by contacting companies and connecting them to the students. Many employers contact the office in search of students to recruit for various positions.
The Career Services office is located in the Thompson Center 301.
