BET College Tour Weekend Coming to WSSU

BET will brings its annual college tour to Winston-Salem State on Friday, Oct. 26, from noon to 4 p.m.

This marks the sixth year of the tour, which visits 14 Historically Black Colleges and Universities over a 10-week period and provides students with four hours of fun and activities. The tour began on Sept. 7 and ends Nov. 9.

Various activities will be set up throughout campus, including a video skills challenge, an obstacle course, and even a 2-on-2 basketball competition sponsored by the Air Force.

Students who have participated in the college tour in the past agree that the tour was a highlight of the school year and provided an opportunity to not only have fun with friends but was also enjoyable because it had things that they liked to do.

Mini concerts and freestyle battles, which allows students to show off their rhyming skills, are two of the main attractions.

The tour is sponsored by several companies with considerable clout, including McDonalds, Verizon, Pepsi, Playstation, Merck, and Rap It Up.

BET’s goal in reaching college-age students across the country is to help students have a good time while helping them learn how to get through challenges they may face during their four years in school. Several information booths and tents will be set up to provide health information, along with a separate “Rap It Up” tent that provides information about sex and AIDS.

“It gives students a chance to get out on campus and meet different people and do different things,” said Meagan Ross. Ross said her favorite part of the tour last year was the 3-point shootout contest, which allowed people to show off their basketball skills.

The tour is also visiting Bethune Cookman, Jackson State, Southern, Grambling, and Bowie State. All of the highlights from this year’s tour will be videotaped and played on BET blast. The video highlights will include what happened at on other campuses on the tour.
