Terry Hines joins the Department of Athletics

Terry Hines has been named Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs at Winston-Salem State University. The announcement was made Feb. 8 by WSSU Director of Athletics, Dr. Chico Caldwell.

Hines was most recently the Associate Athletics Director for Major Gifts at the University of Kansas. At WSSU he will be responsible for identifying, cultivating and soliciting major gift prospects for all varsity sports as well as spearheading and overseeing the implementation of the athletic department’s marketing and communications policies and procedures. “We are very excited to have a person like Terry, a person with extraordinary qualifications and background in fundraising and management, join our Athletic Department,” Caldwell said. “He brings the experience, talent, skill and work ethic to a position that we have never had in the WSSU Department of Athletics, and this will be especially important to us in the realm of athletic fundraising.

“The fact that he comes from a respected institution such as the University of Kansas is outstanding in the fact that he has experience at the highest level. He also has an understanding of the needs of a small college and his hiring is a homecoming of sorts as he is now able to return to his home state of North Carolina …we have specific projects that he will take on right away as it relates to the new athletic field house, our season ticket plans, and our television highlight, the ‘Ram Minute’. He will lead our efforts into the Division I level.”

Hines joined Kansas Athletics as an Associate Athletics Director in November 2002 where his major focus was the University’s legal affairs. In that capacity, he provided legal advice to the Director of Athletics on a broad range of issues and served as a project manager for several capital projects. In August 2003, Hines assumed the role of Associate Athletics Director for Compliance and Legal Affairs. In addition to continuing to serve as legal counsel, Hines oversaw the department’s compliance efforts.

Hines came to Kansas after spending 18 months as Director of the Athletic Foundation at his alma mater, Davidson College . At Davidson, Hines supervised a $1.3 million annual giving program, while also directing the planning and execution of development strategies for all Davidson athletic capital projects.

Hines, who is licensed to practice law in Kansas and North Carolina , earned three degrees: a bachelor’s degree in religion from Davidson College (1991), a juris doctorate from the University of North Carolina School of Law (1996), and a master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University (2000). Hines and his wife, Denise, have three sons.
