Winston-Salem State University is growing and changing rapidly. The constant construction on campus is hard to miss for many. Soon, the area known as “The Pit” will add to the new campus developments.
The Pit will break ground when it is transformed into an outdoor recreational facility for students and faculty. Located between the Gaines Center and the Old Nursing Building, The Pit will contain a full-sized basketball court, and a volley court that will have basketball goals with rollaway hoops, which will be mostly used for intramurals and pick-up games. The Pit will also contain a stage for events such as step shows, bleachers for spectators, and a plaza area for students relaxing outside. The project is scheduled to wrap up at the end of April. There is an indoor facility in the works for late 2008 that will contain two or three basketball courts, a running track, movie theatre, food court, and two dance halls, among other features. The proposed indoor facility should be completed some time in 2010.
Dash McNeal, the Director of Campus Recreation, shares the benefits about these projects. “These two facilities will not only be a great asset to the campus recreation department but also will serve as a campus gathering point,” he said.
