Angelou lends support to ‘Words of Wisdom’ contest

Alltel Wireless has partnered with Dr. Maya Angelou for the second annual “Words of Wisdom” essay contest.

In celebration of Black History Month and the 50th anniversary of the Little Rock Nine’s integration of Central High School in Little Rock, Ark., Alltel Wireless and Angelou have announced the second annual “Words of Wisdom: Lessons in Courage” essay contest.

The contest, which runs from Jan. 29 to March 4, challenges students at participating HBCUs across the country to use their knowledge of civil rights history to enact change by posing this question: “Fifty years ago, the Little Rock Nine personified courage and spirit. How will you?”

Nine grand prize winners will each receive a $5,000 scholarship to the HBCU of their choice. They will also travel to Little Rock where they will receive their scholarship during a special reception with Angelou at the Clinton Library.

In addition, Alltel will donate a tenth scholarship to the Little Rock Nine Foundation in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the landmark civil rights event. Graduating high school seniors who will be attending HBCUs are also eligible to participate. All entries must be postmarked by March 4 , and the winners will be announced April 6.
