“What do you guys think about Marcos Bryant?”
This is a question that’s being whispered in classrooms across the campus. My standard response has been: “I thought you were innocent until proven guilty?”
As all students, I was alarmed when I heard the news of Bryant’s arrest. No one wants to think that he or she could possibly be in the company of someone who commits murder. But I also know what it’s like for Bryant’s family because one of my relatives was charged with a felony.
My family and I were in as much disbelief as students on this campus are. It pained us to have the media swarm around us. We all felt as if we were charged with doing something wrong; I think it’s called guilt by association.
Just remember, and I’m a journalist myself, that not everything you see or read is true or the whole truth. Let Bryant have his day in court, before passing judgment.
Let’s also not forget Bryant has a family and friends. So no matter what happens, whether he’s proven innocent or guilty, let’s remember that he was a member of this campus family, made friends here with students and instructors alike, and for these reasons alone, we ought not to try him in the court of public opinion.
