Rams on the move

Concert Tour: The Winston-Salem State University Choir, University Men and the WSSU Burke Singers will begin a national spring promotional and recruiting concert tour with their first concert on Friday, March 3, at 7 p.m. in the nation’s capital at Israel Baptist Church in Washington, DC.

All tour performances are free and open to the public. The spring tour performance will include arrangements by noted composers Roland M. Carter, Moses Hogan, Rosephanye Powell and Roy Belfield, Jr.

New Appointment: Bonita J. Hairston, assistant university counsel at Winston-Salem State University, has been appointed legal counsel at the North Carolina School of the Arts (NCSA), effective March 1.

Hairston had served as assistant university counsel at Winston-Salem State University since June 2004. Prior to joining the staff at WSSU, she served as assistant to the president/attorney at both Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte and Livingstone College in Salisbury.

Hairston has also worked as a staff counsel for Stratos Mobile Networks (USA) LLC, a multi-million-dollar remote telecommunications corporation headquartered in Bethesda, Md., and as staff attorney at Attorney’s Healthcare Inc., in Manassas, Va. Study Abroad: WSSU is joining UNC Wilmington to participate in a summer Chinese language and culture course for the dates of June 25-July 27, 2006. Students will enroll for a three-hour Chinese language course and a three-hour globalization course: China’s Transition to Modernization. Study Spanish: A Spanish-language immersion program is being offered in Costa Rica this summer through UNC Charlotte. The language classes and culture program will be directed by university-trained native speakers of Spanish. Students will meet in small classes for four hours of language instruction per day (Monday through Friday).

Two weekend excursions to fascinating landscapes outside San Jose are also planned. Students can earn six semester hours of credit (three hours of language and three hours of culture) during the four weeks in San Jose.

Prerequisites: Students at all levels of language proficiency may participate in the program.

Upon arrival at the institute, students take a brief placement test. The deadline is February 28, 2006. Program dates: July 1- July 29, 2006 with an approximate cost of $2,950. This includes tuition, health insurance, housing in a private home, breakfast and supper, eleven weekday cultural excursions and two weekend overnight trips to Volcán Arenal and Playa Jacó. In addition to the cost of the program, students will be required to pay round-trip airfare from North Carolina to San José estimated to be $700.

Other costs may include: lunches (about $4 per day); personal travel, and miscellaneous expenses (snacks, souvenirs, entertainment, airport tax and trips).

Deceased: The Ram family said farewell in February to Warren “Pete” Oldham, a former North Carolina state representative from Forysth County and a former administrator at Winston-Salem State University.

Oldham was the husband of Gladys D. Oldham, a WSSU retired professor of business; and father of Leslie Bolden, WSSU coordinator of athletic academic support; and Donna Oldham, a WSSU alumnae and Dell North Carolina corporate executive.
