A Touch of Royalty

Ms. Kelechi C. Anyawu and Mr. William H. Dobbs, III have been crowned Miss WSSU and Mr. Ram 2004-2005. “The Unveiling of a Nubian Queen and the Crowning of a King,” was held in the Kenneth R. Williams Auditorium.

WSSU and African traditions combined to bring about a ceremony marked by tradition and heritage. The Otesha Creative Arts Ensemble opened up the ceremony with a vibrant expression of art through dance. Emcees Brigida Mack, WSOC-TVnews reporter of Charlotte, and Carl Brown, co-founder of FUBU, carried the program with their own added flair as the audience enjoyed the African-themed celebration.

Senior Montrisha Bethea said, “I enjoyed the theme because it was really different fromall previous coronations. It was a way for students to get in touch with our heritage. Ithink that displaying the heritage of the queen should be new tradition to be upheld for years to come.”

Mignon Turner, Miss WSSU 2003-2004, gave her farewell speech that focused on encouraging students to take advantage of the many opportunities WSSU has to offer; one of the primary ideas the SGA stresses. “Become involved…each of us are so talented,” she said.

She spoke specifically about the benefits she gained from actively participating in Career Services events and other programs designed to assist students. She encouraged students of all classifications to do the same. “These opportunities are right here. You should take advantage of them.We have all become billboards of our institution. Make sure that when people look at you they see a proud ram,” Turner said.

The class kings, queens and royal attendants took their places on stage as audience members prepared for Miss Kelechi Chinyere Anyawu’s arrival. Following her entrance and crowning, Miss WSSU gave an emotional acceptance speech in which she gave her word to uphold the standards of the university. “I promise to uphold the name of Miss WSSU…I promise to love my institution and cherish my institution,” she said.

“I say thank you for all of your support. Ihave entered to learn and in May 2005 I will depart to serve.”
