Get down, Get down!

The Rams football team returns this season to fight for its 10th CIAA title and to groom new talent to join the more than two dozen Rams’ who have left WSSU and gone on to play in the National Football League.  The team also starts the 2004 season with a new offensive line coordinator, alumni Dana Walker. Walker replaces Arrington Jones.  “I think (Walker) is definitely up for the challenge,” Head coach, Kermit Blount, said. “…He can definitely get the job done. We’re basically going to do what we did last year offensively…(and) he’s going to add to what we’re doing.”  Last season, the Rams’ football team set several CIAA records, including ones for punt return yardage, pass efficiency, rushing offense and red zone offense.  Of the 120 or so players on the team, nine are recruits, and four of the nine will start this season. “We feel really good about the recruiting class that we were able to put together this year,” Blount said.  He added that he wants the team to be challenged, which is why players have one of the toughest schedules in division two. “I think if you’re going to be the best, you have to play the best.” Blount said.  Senior Josh McGee will move toward the goal of becoming WSSU’s all-time passing yardage leader. He needs 1019 yards to surpass former ram, Tory Woodbury who set the record in 2000. Coach Blount held the title before Woodbury.  McGee also has another mark to hit before leaving WSSU. “He will be the first minority quarterback that will play here (WSSU) and start as a four-year starter,” Blount said.  Although McGee is close to making history, Blount said he admires that McGee is the type of player whose most important goals are not personal ones, but team goals.   Anthony Robinson, defensive lineman for the rams, led the CIAA in tackles last season and is returning to the field 20 pounds heavier. Blount said Robinson is expected to be a more dominant and aggressive player. “We’re looking for him to duplicate what he did last year, and even a little better.”
