Imagine the Possibilities! This phrase graced the campus for the 2003 homecoming week at Winston-Salem State University. For seven days, WSSU students, faculty, administration, alumni, friends, and family celebrated the 62nd annual event.Sunday, Oct. 26 began the week with an Alumni Gospel Concert in K.R. Williams Auditorium. The official kickoff was Monday at the Thompson Center Pavilion with music and fun. Laughter followed at the comedy show featuring national comedians Joe Torry, Guy Torry and Michael Collier in the K.R. Williams Auditorium. The next day, students had the opportunity for 15 minutes of fame by making their own music CD and video in front of the C.F. Thompson Jr. Student Center. Mignon Turner officially began her reign as Miss WSSU Wednesday, at the Coronation. Participants dressed in disguise for the Masquerade Ball in the Anderson Center McNeil Banquet Hall after the coronation. Students and faculty battled to be the best at the Campus Olympics Opening Ceremony, in activities such as basketball, horseshoes, racing, and many other activities in the Thompson Center Pavilion. The Homecoming Halloween Haunted House began at 6:30, Thursday in the Whitaker Gymnasium.Red and White enveloped the WSSU campus on Friday. A Founder’s Day Convocation followed the Wreath Laying Ceremony in K.R. Williams. Students gathered for the Mini Parade and Pep Rally to get geared up for the step show and the football game the following day. The step show that night drew hundreds of homecoming participants to the C.E. Gaines Center to see various Greek organizations compete for the best performance. The parade on Saturday morning drew hundreds of local residents as well as members of the WSSU community. The parade proceeded from 4th street downtown to Martin Luther King drive. Once the parade was cleared, traffic for the football game against Johnson C. Smith University took its place in the streets as thousands lined up to see the WSSU Rams effortlessly drag the Golden Bulls of JCSU. For the first time in years, the Homecoming concert, which featured national recording artists, TI, Ying Yang Twinz, and D-Block with Jadakiss, Sheek and J-Hood, was held in the C.E. Gaines Center. Ebony Briggs, a junior and vice president of external affairs, said the switch from having the concert at the LJVM coliseum was to accommodate the students on campus. She said, “We wanted to make it more affordable and convenient for students.” The turnout for the concert was huge and TI, who was the last to perform, was nearly trampled over by female fans once he jumped off stage. The Alumni Reunion Concert was scheduled to feature the Delfonics, Jay Lamont, and Lakeside, but the event was cancelled due to a shortage of ticket sales. That didn’t stop the Alum from gathering at the Old Schoolhouse Basement Party in the Anderson Center to have a good time that night.As always, a worship service at St. Philips Moravian Church on Sunday closed out the homecoming festivities, bringing seven days of fun, laughter and reminiscing to an end.
