Fifteen Mass Communications students of Winston-Salem State University attended the Howard Job fair held on Thursday and Friday. Assistant Dean College of Arts and Sciences Marilyn Roseboro and campus station manager, Elvin Jenkins, accompanied students.These students took the advantage to seek opportunities that would allow a chance for them to obtain careers within the media industry. Interviews were given by major corporations of the print and broadcast news. Some of the companies included Time Warner, Fox, the Associated Press, and the New York Times. The Howard Job Fair featured forums and panel discussions which students participated in during the first day. Some of the issues included media diversity, and ways to obtain success into the world of news. Representatives and employees of Black Entertainment Telvision, Atlantic Records, and National Broadcasting Channel accepted questions and concerns of individuals about their success. “One of the most interesting panel discussions to me was advice about gaining a career with Atlantic Records; my dream job is to be a singer,” says Selena Cherry who is a senior Mass Communications Major of Winston-Salem State University. This experience at Howard enabled all Mass Communications Majors to present portfolios, resumes and tapes of their work according to the careers of their interest. more
Crystal BullockJob FairAdd 1 “Although some of the people interviewing, would not accept tape or resumes, I still value the opportunity of establishing a network with the company,” says senior Mass Communications major Allison Staton who hopes to intern with the Cable News Network in the future.Career Fair included a tour of the National Public Radio Station located in the city of Washington, D.C. NPR attracts listeners with interest of political debate and global news. Station manager Elvin Jenkins who was an employee of NPR encourages all students to take advantage of all intern opportunities.” Most young people only hear and see 102 Jamz as a popular local station to work for as a permanent career.Everything is not about hip-hop,” says Jenkins. Students such as Toccara Addison junior Mass Communications major express great interest in an intern with a news station this summer. ” I have already called to establish a rapport with a news personality to hopes to obtain an intern very soon”, says Addison. Communications Club President Austin Mackey says,”Attending the Howard Job Fair is more than just an eye opener but it’s a once in a lifetime chance if this is your last year in college, to have the job of your choice”. The Mass Communications majors of Winston-Salem State University prove their abilities to be an asset to society
through their skills and talents at events such as the Howard Job Fair.
