What do Basketball and the American Heart Association have in common? The Physical Education Majors’ Club at Winston-Salem State University is sponsoring its fifth annual “Hoops for Hearts” event. Hoops for Heart is a national program that is sponsored by the American Heart Association (AHA) and The American Alliance for Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. The club’s advisers are Cynthia Williams and Donna Spinks. Some of the students involved are excited about the upcoming event. This year’s coordinator is Maynesha James, a junior exercise science major.”I think it is wonderful that we are raising money for such a good cause, and I think we need to make sure people are aware of heart disease and what it is all about,” said James.Along with James, Tiffany Echols and Marissa Chavis are also participating in this year’s Hoops for Hearts. “I believe in doing whatever possible to help save lives,” said Tiffanie Echols, a junior exercise science major. “My grandmother was a victim of heart disease ,and she passed away last year, so this means a lot to me.” Echols and Chavis are two students who are on the committee to get Hoops for Hearts ready.”This event will be a lot of fun, and all the proceeds are going to a good cause. We are having fun and doing good at the same time,” said Chavis, a junior physical education teaching major. The event will include students in physical activity while raising money to support critical cardiovascular research and education. Hoops for Hearts gives students a chance to contribute to their community’s welfare. The event is scheduled for April 24 from 4 to 9 p.m. in the Gaines Center Gym on campus. Some of the events include a faculty/staff free-throwathon, 3 point shootout, and a 3-on-3 tournament. Last year the club raised over $900 for the AHA. This year the club hopes to be just as successful. Members would like to raise as much money as they can and be able to help the AHA in any way that they can.If you would like to participate, look for signs scattered around campus. The Physical Education Majors’ Club also encourages all students to try to play, watch the game or give a donation to the American Heart Association. If interested, contact the Physical Education Department at 750-2587 or anyone in the club.
