Everyone’s Welcome

How would you like to spend a semester in the place where dreams come true, where each day you run into Mickey Mouse and his friends? Or get the opportunity to visit Epcot Center whenever you choose. Come April 3, you’ll get the chance to not only dream it, but do it at Disney.Recruiters from the Walt Disney World College Program will be on campus searching for students to take part in the program. The program provides students with an insider’s look and real-world experience as each year more then 7,500 college students attend the program.Launched in 1981, the Disney College Program has had more than 200 students from more than 20 colleges and universities in attendance each year. For one Winston-Salem State University student, it was an opportunity that was too good to pass up.Kimberly Williams, a junior, elementary education/English major spent last semester at Disney. She said that although it was a fun experience, it came with a helping of hard work.Students in the program are given a chance to participate in all areas of the park that they could tailor to their educational goals.”Anybody can do it; it is a very good experience to get,” said Williams. She said she was introduced to a host of people from around the world. Plus she had the opportunity to play many of the beloved Disney characters.”I played, Minnie, Mickey, Timon, Pinochio, Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Lilo and Stitch.”While playing the characters was an exciting, there was one drawback.Williams said, “The suits inside were hot.”But while she was a world away, there were still a few things that she missed.”I missed family and friends and missed being up here,” said Williams. “But if you think you have the time to take off from school and do it, do it.”Students in the program lived in one of three apartment complexes on in Disney. Two of the complexes housed students coming for the semester, while the third housed international students who would remain at Disney for the entire semester. Now that she is back in WSSU, she said that there was one great thing she gained from the experience. It taught her about the real world as she honed her time-management skills especially when she was required to clock in and out.”At the end of the semester you have a graduation before you leave,” said Williams. “We received mouse ears as well as a Ducktorate Diploma.”Students who are interested gaining real-world experience can find this through a variety of joys including those in attractions, merchandise, culinary, food and beverage, hospitality, life guarding, recreation and transportation.”We offer such a wide variety of opportunities to college students from across the country, and we’re thrilled that the American Council on Education recommended our programs,” said Kristi Breen, the manager of College Recruiting. “This is just one more wonderful addition to an already valuable and sought after internship.”Students had the opportunity to take part in courses that include Communications, Experiential Learning for the 21st Century, Hospitality Management, Organizational Leadership, College Program Practicum and the Disney Leadership Sparkers Series.Williams does warn, however, that any students thinking of participating should make sure that they have the time to take off from school before they make the trek to the magic kingdom.Recruitment will take place April 3 at 5 p.m. in the Thompson Center.
