Dr. Little has had profound influences on WSSU students

An educated activist, a liberator, and being caring and concerned teacher are just a few of the words that students of Dr. Larry Little use to describe him. It is hard, even for those students who have never had Little as a professor, not to know this man. He serves as the top coordinator of the Political Science department. There is a special aura that surrounds Little, and that same quality is why the sophomore class council chose to honor him as its February Teacher of the Month. The ceremony was held Feb. 19 (University Day) in the Thompson Center room 207.It began with a dedication and remarks from a couple of his students, Antwone James and Maria Singleton, and a longtime comrade, Nelson Malloy. Once the heartening comments were delivered, Little gave a short speech about his appreciation of the award and what it meant to him. Although Little has received numerous other nominations from the state of North Carolina and the city of Winston-Salem, for such awards as “Teacher of the Year,” he admits that nothing is more important than recognition from students.”This award means more to me than if I were given an award from administration,” said Little. The fact that the students found him notably important in their lives and wanted to honor him was more than enough for Little. “You all are the ones that count, y’all are the future,” he said. Professor Little is an honorary graduate of Winston-Salem State University and a founding member of the Winston-Salem chapter of the Black Panther Party. He is also a licensed attorney in the state of North Carolina and a leader of many community programs. Students agree that one could go on and on about the achievements and excellent qualities of this gentleman, as a professor, but even more, this man is a mentor, counselor, and more importantly, a companion. February was Black History Month, and being that Little is not only a great professor, but previously in the Black Panther party, the sophomore class felt the award was especially befitting to him for that month.
